Late-night and holiday calls may carry a surcharge, and you hear it during the call, not after the work.
What Changes The Price?
Here is what moves a price up — so nothing on your receipt is a mystery.
The hardware you choose
A Grade 2 deadbolt and a Medeco high-security cylinder are different purchases. Hardware is always itemized separately from labor on your quote, and you can supply your own.
The lock we find on your door
Picking open a standard cylinder is the base price. High-security cylinders resist picking by design, and a lock that failed internally may need drilling and replacement — we explain why and re-quote before proceeding, never after.
Your car's key technology
A plain metal blade costs less to cut than a transponder key, which costs less than a proximity fob. Tell us the make, model, and year and we quote the exact key type. A few of the newest models restrict programming to dealers; if yours is one, we say so and save you the service call.
The number of doors or cylinders
Rekeying scales gently — $95 for the first cylinder, $25 for each one after — which is why rekeying a whole apartment usually beats replacing a single lock.
When you call
Overnight and holiday emergency work may carry an after-hours surcharge. It is disclosed as part of your quoted total, and it is the only time-based charge we have.
The condition of the door
A century-old brownstone door with a shifted frame takes longer than a new condo slab. If a door needs carpentry beyond lock work, we tell you instead of billing you for a lock that will not hold.
How to Avoid the
$19 Locksmith Scam
Search "locksmith near me" and you will see ads promising service for $19 or $35. That number is bait, and the pattern is well documented enough to have a name: bait-and-switch.
Here is how it runs. A call center — often out of state — takes your call and quotes the ad price. A subcontractor with no license and no local address arrives, inspects your lock for a few seconds, and announces it is a "special lock" that cannot be picked and must be drilled. The $19 job becomes $300–$500, in cash, and you also now need a new lock — theirs, at markup. Standing on your own stoop at midnight, most people pay.
If a locksmith on your doorstep suddenly triples the price, you can refuse the work and pay nothing. That moment of leverage is exactly what published prices are for.
Five checks, none of which require trusting us:
A real total on the phone
A legitimate shop quotes your job before dispatch. "It starts at $19, the tech will price it there" is the tell.
A local, checkable address
Ours is 492 Throop Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11221. If a company hides where it is, ask why.
Picking before drilling
Most residential lockouts open non-destructively. Anyone who reaches for the drill in the first minute is selling you a new lock, not opening your old one.
They verify you
A locksmith who opens your door without checking ID and proof of residency will open it for anyone. We verify both, every time.
Cards accepted
Cash-only demands travel with the scam. We take cash, credit, and debit, with a receipt that matches the quote.
Our No-Hidden-Fee Policy
The policy fits in four sentences, and each one is checkable.
You get the total for your job on the phone before we dispatch.
If the job turns out to be different from what you described — a high-security cylinder, a seized mortise case — we stop, explain, and re-quote before continuing.
Any after-hours surcharge is stated during the call, not discovered at the door.
The receipt matches the approved quote.
There is no service-call fee that appears only on arrival, no "labor minimum" above the listed price, and no charge for giving you an honest recommendation to repair instead of replace.
