Brownstone Locks: Mortise Cases and Segal Jimmy-Proof Deadbolts

The doors on Bed-Stuy's brownstones have outlived every owner who ever locked them. Many still carry their original mortise locks from the 1890s to the 1920s, usually with a Segal jimmy-proof deadbolt added above. Both can almost always be kept working. Here is how this hardware works and when repair beats replacement.

What Is a Mortise Lock?

That single-case design is why mortise locks last a century. The parts are large, machined, and protected inside the door. Compare that to a modern bored cylindrical lock, which hangs its small mechanism in a drilled hole and rarely survives twenty years of daily use.

You can spot a mortise lock from the door's edge. Look for a long metal faceplate with two openings, the angled latch above and the square deadbolt below. On the door's face you will see the knob, often glass or brass on these houses, and a separate keyhole or cylinder beneath it.

The skeleton-key era and the modern cylinder

What Is a Segal Jimmy-Proof Lock?

Instead of sliding a bolt sideways into the door frame, the Segal drops two vertical bolts through rings on a strike plate mounted to the frame. The door and frame interlock. Prying the door away from the frame, the classic jimmy attack with a crowbar, does not release it. It is surface-mounted, so it installs without carving up an old door, another reason landlords loved it for a century.

A Segal in good condition is still legitimate security. If yours is loose, sticky, or running on a worn cylinder, it can usually be serviced or fitted with a new cylinder rather than discarded. The cylinder is the standard rim type, so it swaps in minutes, and it can be upgraded to a pick-resistant model while the body stays on the door. The pairing you see on most brownstone doors, a mortise lock below and a Segal above, remains a sound setup today.

Can an Old Mortise Lock Be Repaired Instead of Replaced?

- Dried lubricant: the case is opened, cleaned, and relubricated. The action comes back. - Broken springs and levers: individual parts can be replaced or matched from salvaged cases. - Worn or insecure cylinder: a modern cylinder is fitted; the case stays. - Misalignment: hinges and strikes are adjusted so the bolt stops grinding.

Match the symptom to the fix

None of those symptoms requires replacing the case. All of them get worse if you respond by forcing the key harder.

Repair matters on these houses because the lock is part of the door. Ripping out a mortise case leaves a large rectangular hole that no modern lock fills cleanly. Patching it means cutting into a door that has survived since the 1890s and may be irreplaceable, especially in the Stuyvesant Heights historic district. Our mortise lock repair in Brooklyn service exists mostly to keep these doors intact.

When Is Replacing a Brownstone Lock the Right Call?

- The case is cracked or the internal frame is bent. Machined parts can be swapped; a broken housing cannot. - The door itself is failing. A rotted or split stile will not hold any lock securely. - You need higher security than the old case can give, such as a high-security cylinder the case cannot accept. - Parts simply cannot be sourced, and the labor to fabricate them costs more than good new hardware.

When replacement is right, you still have choices that respect the door. A new mortise lock can go into the existing pocket. A quality surface-mounted deadbolt, Segal-style, adds security with minimal cutting. Full details are on our lock replacement page.

How Do You Maintain a Mortise or Segal Lock?

If you own one of these houses, the original hardware is worth keeping. It was built better than most of what replaced it, and with a modern cylinder inside, it protects like it should. Locksmith Bed Stuy works on this hardware daily across the neighborhood; see what else applies to your block on our Bed-Stuy locksmith page.
