The tailpiece or the bolt linkage has failed inside the lock. This is a repair, not a replacement — the part costs far less than new hardware.
The bolt will not reach the strike
The door has sagged or the frame has shifted — normal in a 130-year-old rowhouse. We adjust the strike and hinges so the bolt throws fully. A deadbolt that only half-throws is not locked.
The cylinder spins loosely
The set screw or cam has let go. Quick fix, and a warning sign worth acting on before it becomes a lockout.
A key broke off inside
We extract broken keys from $85 without drilling and cut a new key on the spot. Keys rarely snap without cause — worn pins force you to torque the key harder each month until the brass gives. We check the cylinder after every extraction.
The lock acts up in winter or after rain
